Why the timing is the product
Kanawa sits close to the equator, so golden hour is short — typically 30 to 45 minutes of soft light after sunrise and before sunset. Standard day trips leave Labuan Bajo mid-morning and depart mid-afternoon, so visitors photograph the jetty and hilltop under high, contrast-heavy sun with other boats in frame.
A photography charter flips that. The crossing takes 20 to 30 minutes by speedboat, so a sunrise charter leaves in the dark and has you on the hilltop or jetty before first light, usually between 05:00 and 05:30 depending on season. A sunset charter stays after the shared boats have left, shoots through the late window, and returns after dark.
Either way you get the island’s most photographed angles at their emptiest and best lit.

The jetty
A long wooden pier over clear turquoise shallows with coral visible below. At low golden hour the water reads glassy and the timber warms up — shooting it outside day-trip hours is the main reason this charter exists.

The hilltop viewpoint
A short, steep trail to a ridge above the bay: the curve of the beach, the reef gradient from sand to deep blue, and the outer Komodo islands layered on the horizon. Sunrise rakes across the bay; sunset silhouettes the western islands.

Split-shots on the house reef
Shallow coral beside the jetty is one of the easier places in the area to attempt half-in, half-out frames — you can stand or float in calm, waist-to-shoulder water close to healthy coral heads.

Lower tides open the sandbar; the captain will reposition the boat for approach angles from the upper deck.

Frequently asked questions
Sunrise or sunset — which is better for Kanawa?
Sunrise gives the emptiest island, the calmest water for split-shots, and light raking across the bay from behind Flores. Sunset gives silhouetted outer islands and warmer western light, though a few late boats may still be around. Serious shooters often book an overnight and take both.
Can I fly a drone on the tour?
Only where current rules allow. Drone use around Komodo National Park generally requires prior permission, so declare your drone at booking and we will confirm what is possible for your date rather than guess on the beach.
Do I need to be a professional photographer?
No. Many guests shoot with phones and a drone. The value of the charter is the timing and the empty frames; the crew helps with positioning whether you carry a cinema rig or a pocket camera.
Can non-photographers in my group still enjoy it?
Yes. Snorkel gear is on board, the house reef is directly beside the jetty, and the schedule leaves swim time between shooting windows.
