Kanawa Island Photography Charter

Think in layers: beach, reef, horizon. From the shallows, shoot back toward the beach or straight down at the coral while the water is glassy; polarising filters help. On the hill, arrive early enough to wait for clouds to clear; wind can change fast. Pack a dry bag for the short but wet speedboat crossing and a headlamp for pre-dawn or after-dark returns.

For many visitors, Kanawa Island underwater photography snorkeling is easier than in rougher park sites. The house reef starts shallow, with coral heads in 1–3 m and a wall dropping to 5–18 m, so you can work both wide and macro. Currents are usually manageable over the main reef, but always check conditions with the captain before swimming out with cameras.

For split-shots and shallow reef work, aim for mid-morning after sunrise or the early side of golden hour, when the sun is still high enough to punch through the surface but soft enough to avoid harsh glare. On this charter, the captain will time entry around both light angle and tide so coral heads sit just below the surface.

The classic Kanawa Island snorkel route starts at the beach and follows the reef edge away from the former jetty site. Stay over sand until you see the drop-off, then work along the wall looking back toward the island for silhouettes. Keep an eye on boat traffic in the landing area, and always surface well clear of hulls.

Menjerite usually has thicker fish schools and slightly clearer water, so it often wins for pure reef and schooling shots. Kanawa’s strength is variety in one compact area: shallow reef structures, sand patches, and a wall all within fin distance. If you want underwater photography and a topside golden hour in the same day, Kanawa is the more rounded stop on a short charter.

Work backwards from sunset: you want to be on the hill or the main beach 45–60 minutes before the sun drops. From Labuan Bajo, the speedboat run takes about 20–35 minutes, so departures are usually mid-afternoon, with an after-dark return. Assume no: power on Kanawa has historically come from generators with limited schedules, and 2024–2025 reports mention outages. If you intend to stay overnight, confirm current power arrangements with your chosen operator before leaving Labuan Bajo.

Most of the main beach is open sand with strong sun. There are usually a few simple shaded zones — trees, old resort structures, occasionally tarps — but whether Kanawa Island has any shaded picnic tables or only open sand areas changes with maintenance and season. For comfort, assume limited shade: pack a hat, long-sleeve rash guard, and your own drinking water.
