Labuan Bajo sells a dozen day trips and they are not interchangeable. Kanawa is the right answer for reef time and a short crossing — and the wrong one if you came for dragons or the Padar photograph.
Come to Kanawa for reef time. The wall starts 30 m off the beach and you need no boat once you are there.
Go to Padar instead if the photograph is the point. Kanawa has a viewpoint; it is not that viewpoint.
Go to Rinca or Komodo for dragons. Kanawa has none, and no amount of routing changes that.
Kanawa sits outside the national park boundary, so a Kanawa-only day usually carries no park ticket. That is a real cost difference.
Most people do not have to choose. A private boat covers three to five stops in a day, and the common answer is Padar early, Kanawa late — which is why so many of the combination routes end here.

A private speedboat reaches Kanawa in twenty to twenty-five minutes. That speed is what makes a combination day work: Padar at first light, Pink Beach mid-morning, a Manta Point drift, then Kanawa for a late-afternoon swim and a short hop home. Kanawa becomes the finale rather than the whole trip, and the reef is at its emptiest by then anyway.
That route crosses the park boundary, so park fees apply. A Kanawa-only day generally does not. The difference is worth asking about before you decide.
